Lobster – WTF??!

I go and see a lot of films and when I saw the trailer for Lobster with a great cast, Colin Farrell, Rachel Weisz, Oliva Coleman and cameo’s by lots of recognisable English comedy actors, I was hooked.

The story set in a dystopian futuristic England where you HAVE to live in a couple and should you find yourself single are checked into a hotel and given 45 days to find a mate or be turned into an animal of your choice. Sounded to me like a great idea for a film – if not slightly close to home.

But half way in when Colin Farrell’s’ character decides to run away from the hotel and join the renegade singles in the woods, it all goes downhill into a pointless mush of totally pointless mush. It could have been edited down to 75 minutes which, potentially could have saved it. Instead, I completely lost interest in the second half and spent it contemplating what animal I would choose to be turned into, I would be a parrot.

At the end of the film, there was silence in the auditorium. Usually, there is a bit of a buzz, but the audience, like me, my friend and the woman sitting next to me – who asked me if I had understood it – were silent. Everyone just looking blankly not quite believing that they had wasted two hours of their precious lives and £10.

The queue of people waiting to get in must have picked up on the mood of the exiting crowd.  It would hardly have charged them up with excitement and anticipation to see us walking out silently with confused looks on our faces.

I just don’t get the rave reviews… It was terrible!

3/10 and only because Colin Farrell can do no wrong and Rachel Weisz has the perfect voice for the narrator.

Please feel free to leave a comment if you agree with me or,  like the critics, thought this was a masterpiece!
